MY MELODY
A bus, a city, a route. In the introduction of Mijke van Griensven's animated film 'MY MELODY', the observer has a birdís eye view of the route to be followed. A second later he is back in a densely built-up city. Free from his body, he glides in form the back through a bus, without experiencing any reaction from his follow passengers. The journey continues futher through the windscreen and through the streets of the city. Exaggerated perspectives and quick changes of directions create the dynamics. In the wake of metropolitan life, the observer is drawn through the city, encounters the same bus again, and develops a routine to walk through it and continue his route. But the course of events is interrupted, resulting from billboards and illuminated advertisements. They are ornaments of the ciyscape which observe and simultaneously ignore everyday. In this case, they escape from their designated static existence and develop lives of their own. The little girl waves cheerfully from a swimming pool, the cat leaves his oval. These are brief moments of freedom and confusion. In the film's story line they stand for confrontation and interruption. The route through the public area ends when the observer opens a door and steps into a room. This is the ultimate confrontation with his fantasy. In Japanese metropolises, people escape from day-to-day commuter existence by daydreaming of reading manga's. This was the reason for Mijke van Griensven to give shape to this journey in reality and fantasy.
The theme of repetition and journeys through the imagination is reflected in the sound (by Rikkert Brok) that accompanies the images: A repeating drum rhythm is complemented by a soft flute melody. The combination makes it clear that routine is not necessarily an enemy of fantasy, but can keep the spirit clear of the here and now so that he can go on a journey - in search of his melody.
